What winter taught you about your gear this season

You’ve likely encountered some unexpected moments with your equipment in the cold weather recently some surprising, others frustrating, and a few that left you wondering, Why is this happening now? This space is for you to share the quick lessons you’ve learned while using your gear throughout this winter season.

The craziest was when a haul truck wouldn’t shift out of neutral during a cold snap. We were sure the transmission was toast, but it turned out the hydraulic fluid had gelled because a heater didn’t cycle overnight. We spent half the morning warming the system and flushing lines. After that, we really got serious about our cold-weather prep and made a checklist so it wouldn't take us by surprise again.

The weirdest thing happened, my loader joystick just froze solid overnight! I was ready to blame the hydraulics, but nope, just ice. A bit of heat and now I check it every day, good as new.

Another time, one of the small rigs kept throwing up warning lights whenever the temp dropped below freezing. I was messing with sensors for days before I found out the battery ground strap was corroded just enough to mess things up in the cold. Cleaned it, and bam, problem gone. Winter’s great at showing up the little things.

Then there was the support truck that kept losing steam when it got cold. Turns out, the air filter was sucking in moisture and icing over. Switched to a winter setup, and it’s been fine. Now I always check the airflow first before I go blaming the fuel.
