Spotting play and vibration on NH axles

While I was working in the field, I noticed a slight shimmy when under load, prompting me to think about the axles and driveshafts.

What quick checks, feel tests, or simple habits do you have for catching play or vibration early?

Check the front axle pivot pin for any play, grab the front wheels and rock the axle side to side. If there's too much movement, it can cause a shimmy when under load. Also, look at the driveshaft shields for any contact marks, if they're rubbing, something may have shifted or worn out, allowing for movement.

Feel the steering wheel for vibrations, if the vibration changes with load, it usually points to driveline problems. Constant vibrations, no matter the throttle, suggest issues with the wheels or tires. This helps you quickly narrow down whether it’s the drivetrain or rolling components that are causing the issue.

Engage 4WD and then disengage, then reengage while turning, if you hear grinding or feel any resistance, it’s a sign that front axle components are wearing out. Check the CV boots on the front axle for tears, once they rip, dirt can get in and ruin the joints quickly. Regular inspections can save you from costly axle repairs later on
