Looking to check ECU fault codes without dealer tools?

There was this one time when my tractor started throwing codes right in the middle of a job, and the dealer's scanner was miles away. I ended up grabbing a budget OBD reader and using some blink-code tricks I stumbled upon online. It took a bit of trial and error, but I managed to save myself a trip and a whole lot of frustration.

I remember when my loader decided to act up, and all the dealer equipment was just too far away. Started cycling the power, counting the dash flashes, and checking the fuses with a multimeter. It wasn't the most high-tech approach, but it helped me narrow down the ECU issue enough to reach out to the pros with some useful info in hand.

I am thinking of trying to use one of the (many) DPA5 for CNH scan tools offered on Amazon / eBay. I am expecting there is high probability of less than legitimate products being offered. Has any one here actually purchased, with successful use of one these offerings? I am trying to work on a 2017 new Holland C232.
