Crawler vs wheel, which handles steep terrain better?

I’m stuck trying to decide between crawler and wheeled excavators for some hillside work, and honestly, it’s a tough call! I really need to know which one offers better traction and stability on those tricky slopes. If anyone has some real-life experiences to share about how they perform on steep and uneven ground, I’d love to hear it.

Crawlers really shine on steep inclines. Their lower center of gravity and constant track contact give them better stability. On the other hand, wheeled excavators can zip along flat surfaces and roads, but they struggle on side slopes that exceed 15 degrees. So, if you’re focused on hillside jobs, a crawler is definitely the safer option.

It's worth thinking about ground disturbance as well. Crawlers distribute their weight more effectively, which helps limit soil damage, especially on softer or wet slopes. However, if you're frequently moving between sites, wheeled units can be more time-efficient and cost-effective for transportation.

Also think about how stable the machine is when it swings and how far the boom can reach. Crawlers usually stay put when digging on slopes, even when the arm is extended. Wheeled machines can feel a bit shaky if they're not perfectly level, especially when dealing with sideways pressure
