I’m helping my son in law with his 1988 Ford 8210 Gen 2. He’s noticed a ticking noise at idle that can also be heard in the cabin at mid to high rpm. We checked the valve tappets around 60% are just under tolerance, and one valve is way off.

Looking at the results alongside the OEM tolerances, it doesnt seem like the tappets are the main culprit. I’m worried it might be a deeper issue.

I dont know much about these engines, can the cam wear out? And if so, what’s the best place to source replacement parts like pistons, rings and other components?? Any advice would be a huge help.

You got this! @george.watkins Ticking like that could definitely point to cam wear or lifter issues if the tappets aren't the main problem. Check with Tractor Supply or reliable online Ford tractor parts dealers for OEM or aftermarket rebuild kits.

Got it, thanks! Do you think its better to check the lifters and cam individually first, or should i plan on a full rebuild right away for the 8210 Gen 2?
