I picked up a '63 Ford 2000 from a guy in Kentucky who used it for mowing and hauling firewood. It originally had a Select-O-Speed but now it runs a 5 speed manual. I'm trying to figure out what oil to use in the transmission and rear end that won't break the bank. I have UTF on hand but I want to confirm it's safe for this setup. Also, does the 5 speed provide an independent PTO or do I need to clutch every time?

Ran the same setup on my old Ford. The 5-speed gives you a two-stage clutch for "live" PTO, but not independent like the Select-O-Speed had. And yes, UTF is what you want... it covers transmission, rear end, and hydraulics all in one. Just stick to a good quality brand and you're good.

Speaking of that 5 speed, most aftermarket or swapped manuals don't give you an independent PTO, so you'll usually need to clutch to engage it

Both of you mentioned that the PTO isn't independent with the 5-speed, which aligns with what I was seeing. Victor, you said it's "live" with a two-stage clutch, while Friter pointed out most swaps don't give full independence. This clears up the confusion I had between the Select-O-Speed and the manual. I'll stick with UTF for now, unless I encounter any issues with shifting.

Quick follow up: if I notice lag or hesitation in PTO engagement, is that usually clutch wear or something deeper in the linkage?
