5030 acting like a dragster

My neighbor asked me to help with his New Holland 5030 and every time you try to shift into gear while it's running it jumps like it's lining up at a drag strip. We checked the clutch pedal free play and it seems okay, but it still pulls when it should be disengaged. I don't mind helping him out but I'd like to point him in the right direction before we start wrenching. Has anyone seen this turn out to be a clutch disk hanging up?

That sounds a lot like what happened with my uncle's 5610. His tractor jumped hard when shifting too. The clutch disk was stuck because of rust and dirt. We took the tractor apart, cleaned it well, and it worked great after that. You might want to check if the disk is stuck or if the pilot bearing is jammed.

Yeah, the jammed pilot bearing is another strong possibility. We plan to get the tractor into the shop this weekend to begin the teardown. About how many hours did the job take you from start to finish?
